Low Intensity Prescribed Fire In the Sierra Nevada

Low-intensity prescribed fire is one of the most effective tools for restoring forest health in the Truckee region. Historically, fire played a natural role in maintaining Sierra Nevada forests by reducing excess vegetation, recycling nutrients, and creating more resilient landscapes. Today, decades of fire suppression have led to dense fuels that increase the risk of high-severity wildfires.

By reintroducing low-intensity fire under carefully planned conditions, land managers and local burn associations can safely reduce hazardous fuels while protecting large trees and improving overall ecosystem balance. These burns help slow future wildfires, improve wildlife habitat, and enhance watershed health.

In the Truckee area, prescribed fire is especially important for protecting communities in the wildland-urban interface. When implemented correctly, it creates defensible space at a landscape scale—making it safer for firefighters and residents alike. Simply put, more good fire today means less catastrophic wildfire tomorrow.
